Libya, Thailand Chosen to be UN Human Rights Council Members


Libya and Thailand are among 14 nations elected as new members of the UN Human Rights Council,  in the selection of human rights advocates criticized as being uncompetitive and “immature.”

Angola, Mauritania, Uganda, Maldives, Malaysia, Qatar, Moldova, Poland, Ecuador, Guatemala, Spain and Switzerland also elected by the General Assembly for a term of three years on the council which has 47 member states. Human Rights Council based in Geneva.

Libya and Thailand was criticized by human rights groups because of their human rights records.

“The elections board has become immature processes that break the sense of membership standards created by the General Assembly,” said Peggy Hicks, global advocacy director at Human Rights Watch.
