PHUKET: The Department of special investigation is necessary to fight the “people of bad influence” on Phuket, a leading businessman said a Government Commission yesterday.
Observers believe that the reference has been on the rise of corruption and graft on Phuket. The DSI is sometimes called equivalent of Thailand of the FBI.
The call for intervention was Tan Chee Kiong, a businessman well known Phuket, speaking as Vice-Chairman of the Board industrial Phuket.
It does not given details on the identity of the “bad influence people” by addressing a Committee of the influential National Economic and Social Advisory Council, which is holding a series of meetings on Phuket.
Members of the Committee have been reviewing disaster management, public transport, infrastructure and other aspects of tourism on Phuket and in other destinations around the Thailand.

Guides need more knowledge on the environment. Information for tourists must be provided in a greater number of languages. Disaster management requires greater coordination between the resorts and the authorities; Public transport remained too expensive; A fund should be established to help small and medium-sized companies hit by a disaster; CSR in Phuket (turtle releases, community action) should be more widespread; Security and tourism should be a priority; Visitor information centres must be of high quality. The reception staff must be well formed; Set industry standards need to lift to match all ASEAN; The effects of global economic trends should be better understood; Resort owners who provide staff with accommodation deserve tax relief; Direct benefits must come from skills development; All tourist scams must stop.
