THE USS Ronald Reagan Navy carrier containing almost 5500 crew docked at Ao Makham deep sea port in Phuket on Tuesday 22 September.
Onboard the USS Ronald Reagan were 5000 sailors, 61 aircrafts and two ships. All of which had been on the ship since it deployment on May 28 from San Diego.
Rear Admiral Scott Hebner said, “We were at sea for about 45 days before anchoring in Phuket, my first time to Phuket was in 1991 and I still remember the fresh seafood, beautiful beaches and friendly people.”
The seafaring sailors will surely see all that and more during their five day stay in Patong. Although they have been warned about the ‘Jet Ski business’ in Patong, they will be allowed to do anything that a regular visitor to Patong does. Luckily for the 1000 or so female sailors, Phuket will be able to offer a variety of other options to also help them enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation.
Admiral Scott Hebner said, “It is very exciting to be in Phuket, visiting Phuket is a clear signal reminder of the relationship between the United State Navy and Royal Thai Navy to maintain peace and well being for all nations.”
During their stay, they will be involved in a variety of missions to help the community including helping to paint, fix and construct new buildings at Habitat Humanities in Patong, Kalim school, Baan Sai Namyen school, Klong Sai school, Home and Life and Patong Child Care Center.
A Thai member of the US Navy Tanan Tangpradabkul who works as a tower supervisor in Primary flight control said, “I learned a lot from the US Navy and the technological developments they use. I will be able to use this in my future career when I become a pilot in the Thai army.”
The huge carrier was launched on March 5 2001 and commissioned on July 12, 2003. The overall length is 1,092 ft, the flight deck width is 257 ft. The overall area of the flight deck is an amazing 4.5 acres and the beam is 134 ft high.
