Jet ski traders will soon be forced to get insurance and register their jet skis with the marine transport and Phuket maritime office if they wish to continue operating.
The recent controversy surrounding jet skis in Phuket prompted 23 September’s meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall. It was attended by Jet Ski traders, private and government sectors and the Phuket Internal Security Operations Command.
As a result of the meeting, it was decided that only the registered jet skis on the island (of which there are 219) may provide a service to tourists and owners of unregistered jet skis who continue operating will face prosecution.
However, a decision with regard to insurance was still not reached at the meeting, Rear Admiral Amornchote Sujirat said, “Interested insurance companies should hand in their proposals to Phuket Provincial Hall by October 8, and a decision will be made by October 9.”
The selected insurance company is likely to implement a system where the insurance will only cover the body, engine and damaged parts of the jet ski caused by customers and not from being transported, playing at a show or from damage caused by fire.
Jet ski operators will be restricted to make a maximum of six claims a year and also have to cover the first 1,500 baht on each claim.
The meeting also agreed that proper medical insurance must be provided for the driver, passenger, and the third person. This should cover the costs of up to a 100,000 baht of medical treatment.
